Why CrossFit Games “The Capitol” has been my favorite event for years

Among the more than a dozen events scheduled at the CrossFit Games each year, there are some that will make you kinda “meh,” some that you know need to be tested, some that you absolutely will loathe some that get you on your feet (cue in the cleaning and bucking and grabbing ladders) then some that are absolutely four fires 🔥🔥🔥🔥 emoji awesome.

The latter category will look different for everyone, but for me, this event is The Capitol. Here’s why.

Taking the CrossFit games to the streets

Adrian Bozman made history by literally taking CrossFit to the streets of Madison, around the Capitol building and up the steps, Rocky Balboa style.

The games have never been so integrated into the city and for my part I am there for that. Thousands of triathlons, marathons, trot and run, crawl and bike races of all kinds traverse cities around the world, inspiring spectators to maybe play a sport, but bring the city to life in a way only sport can .

Boz, let’s do something like this again, please.

Unknown and Unrecognizable

I think this was the perfect mix of a legitimate test and fun fan engagement, utilizing the city’s rough terrain, concrete steps, curves and elevation changes as part of the competition floor.

Enough pig flips to get your heart rate pumping. Heavy enough to let the stronger athletes do their thing.

Run long enough for everyone to burn. Gives the speed demons a chance to catch up.

Pick up these strongman-style objects and see how you handle the terrain and stairs.

Credit points:

  • Who has completed all parts of this training correctly?
  • Who trained with strange objects? After all, in L1, don’t we learn that one aspect of functional movement (aka CrossFit) is learning to “move large loads quickly over long distances”? Sounds a lot like the second part of this event.
  • Who can handle the unknown element of carrying objects over rough terrain?
  • Who managed to walk the fine line between speed and chaos and come out on top?

I think this workout ticks all of those boxes.

My last reason: No time limit

I remember the first time CrossFit jumped at us with a “The clock won’t save your workout.” It was the final event of the 2015 CrossFit Open: 21-18-15-12-9-6-3 with Barbell Thrusters and Bar-Facing Burpees.

The catch: There was no time limit. If you wanted a score, you had to do the work, plain and simple.

The same applies here.

All athletes had to complete the entire event, which means everyone suffers. Everyone runs the full distance and more importantly everyone has to wear the jerry bag and more importantly everyone has to wear the Husafell bag which presented the greatest challenges for the athletes.

To be clear, I don’t have a problem with time limits, but I like a well thought out event like this that lets all athletes share the same pain with no escape. I don’t think it works everywhere, but I think it worked very well here.

  • For what it’s worth, last place finisher Rebecca Fuselier finished 21 minutes, 8 seconds slower than Gabi Migala who finished in 33:34. It’s going to hurt a lot tomorrow.

OK, my last, last reason

Because of moments like this.
