Catch up on the latest news and storylines surrounding the UVA men’s basketball program
Virginia Athletics
It may be the off-season, but there’s no shortage of important news about the Virginia men’s basketball program, from recruiting updates to practice clips as the team begins preparations for the season. Every Friday we post a recap with the latest Cavaliers headlines for the week.
Most of this week’s news is coming from the recruitment front, where several prospects in the Class of 2023 included Virginia in their final cuts.
Just a week after making an offer to Trey Green (Mooresville, NC), the four-star point guard included Virginia in his top five along with Xavier, LSU, VCU and Miami. He wants to announce his decision on Saturday. Green didn’t attend UVA, so the chances of him picking the Cavaliers are slim. Xavier is the top favourite.
On Friday, Virginia made the top 3 for four-star wing Jamie Kaiser, one of the best prospects in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Burke, Virginia native has narrowed his offering list from nearly 40 programs to the last three of UVA, Indiana and Maryland. All three schools have hosted Kaiser for official visits this summer, but the Terrapins are front runners to land his signing when he announces his decision on Sunday 7th August.
The Cavaliers are finalists for five recruiting goals in the Class of 2023. Along with Kaiser and Green, Virginia has the top lists for four-star combo guard Freddie Dilione (Raleigh, NC), four-star combo guard Taison Chatman (Minneapolis, MN) and four-star wing Andrej Stojakovic (Carmichael, CA).
UVA hosted multiple Recruitment Targets at Grounds in each of Classes 2023, 2024 and 2025 this week.
6’3″ combo guard Elijah Gertrude (Jersey City, NJ), one of Virginia’s top targets in the Class of 2023, completed an official visit to UVA last week. He has offers from Kansas, Syracuse, St. John’s, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, and others.
Three 2024 targets also attended UVA in recent days, each walking away with scholarship offers: 6’5″ shooting guard Jaeden Mustaf (Matthews, NC), 6’4″ combo guard Jayden “Juke” Harris (Salisbury, NC) and 6’7″ wing Caleb Williams (Washington, DC) were all offered by Tony Bennett and the Cavaliers this week.
Colt Langdon, a 6’8-inch winger from Raleigh, North Carolina, from the Class of 2025, got an early jump in his recruiting process when he paid a visit to UVA on Wednesday.
Langdon and this week’s other visitors were able to get in on the action as Virginia prepares for its 10-day show tour of Italy next week. The Cavaliers will play four exhibition games from August 10-20.
UVA’s “Green Machine” (scout/practice team) featured a fairly star-studded line-up on Friday, with alumni Mamadi Diakite, Anthony Gill, Sam Hauser and Jay Huff returning to the grounds to help out in practice.
