How to wear the euphoria style gemstone trend this Summer 2022

Everything is glitzy and glittery this summer.

Maybe it’s because we’re dealing with the tight restrictions in Hong Kong while the rest of the world moves on, but lately I’ve seen a rise in flashy, sometimes OTT, makeup as if people are trying , authorities hit back. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if there’s a direct connection between the two, but it makes sense that after three years of rules and regulations we’d want to express ourselves in dramatic ways — through makeup, fashion, and so on.

And so, in 2022 comes the advent of the face jewelry trend. Or should I say the concerning-Formation of face gems. Because this trend, along with blue eyeshadow and coin highlights, is returning to the scene after a 20-year hiatus. Straight from the late ’90s and early ’00s, jeweled rhinestone accents have been spotted all over the world, from the Fall/Winter 2022 Fashion Week runway to almost every scene on Euphoria. And of course the streets of Hong Kong (but perhaps to a lesser extent).

Either way, what used to be exclusively worn to red carpet events or Halloween is now showing up in our daily lives and I’m not complaining. Stop by the mall or go to the cinema? Make a splash by sporting this season’s hottest makeup trend: face gems.

From stick-on embellishments to gemstone stickers, there are endless ways you can rock the face jewelry trend. Choose your favorite rhinestones, pearls and sequins and apply them along your eyelids, as freckles, on your nails and yes, even on your teeth. Here are our tips.

Face gems that will help you reach the main character’s energy:

At HK$25, Elf Cosmetics face, body and nail beads are an affordable way to upgrade your everyday look. Three sizes make it easy to mix and match and set the right vibe – the smallest pearls add a subtle touch of glamour, while the largest pearls help complete a bold, daring look. To use them, simply pull the face stones out of the packaging and apply to dry skin.

Colorpop's Mixed Crystal Face Jewels

I get big love vibes with Colorpops Mixed Crystal Face Jewels. This sheet of iridescent pastel stars, hearts and gemstones catches the light in just the right way, enough to make anyone glow. Bonus: Each piece of jewelry is not only self-adhesive for easy application, but also reusable so you can experiment with different looks throughout the summer.

Lime Crime holographic face and eye stickers

Get yours with the holographic face and eye stickers from popular beauty brand Lime Crime. Dipped in euphoric colors, these self-adhesive embellishments come in 44 shapes — we’re talking electric lightning bolts, diamonds, stars and more — and three sets of liners. Stick them under your lash line, over your crease, under your brow and anywhere else to add a little excitement to your night-time look.

Cholas x Chulas' CryBaby Teardrops

Who else loves Melanie Martinez? Bring her hit album to life with the CryBaby Teardrops from Cholas x Chulas, a small Latinx-owned beauty brand that specializes in all things glitter. 70 teardrop-shaped jewels with a fierce holographic glow come in three colors and two sizes so you can craft to your heart’s content.

Squish's Flower Power Acne Patches

Instead of crying over your acne, make your breakouts a little funnier — okay, maybe a little more bearable – with Squish’s Flower Power Acne Patches. These non-drying acne stickers are healing, protective, and cute. They are made of hydrocolloid that helps draw impurities to the skin’s surface. Simply stick a patch on your blackheads before bed or before heading out and peel off later to reveal flawless skin.

Glitter by MAC Cosmetics

Let yourself shine with the face glitter collection from MAC Cosmetics. The brand offers glitter in 12 basic shades, three holographic variations, an iridescent pick, a heart-shaped option and a star-shaped option. What you do with these loose glitters is entirely up to you – mix them with your makeup for a radiant effect, or use them alone to make a statement.
