Avinash Sable broke his own national record by winning silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, while Priyanka Goswami also picked up a medal of the same color in the 10,000m on a productive day for India at the Commonwealth Games athletics competitions here on Saturday Women’s sidewalk won.

Goswami also made history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a race walk medal with a silver medal in the 10,000m dash.

The two silver medals brought the Indian track and field team’s medal tally to four, already surpassing the tally at Gold Coast 2018, where the country won gold, silver and bronze respectively in track and field.

High jumper Tejswin Shankar and long jumper Murali Sreeshankar had won bronze and silver respectively in Birmingham.

Sable, 27, clocked 8:11.20s to improve on his previous national record of 8:12.48 and finish behind Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot (8:11.15). Another Kenyan, Amos Serem, took bronze with a time of 8:16.83.

Kibiwot finished fifth at last month’s World Championships in Eugene, USA, with a time of 8:28.95, while Sable finished a disappointing 11th in the slowest-ever 3000m steeplechase in 8:28.95.

With the silver, Sable made up for his disappointing performance at the World Championships.

The Indian Armyman, a farmer’s son from the village of Mandwa in Beed District, Maharashtra, had the satisfaction of beating World Championship bronze medalist Conseslus Kipruto of Kenya, who finished sixth here with a time of 8:34.96.

Sable, who used to serve at the Siachen Glaciers before turning to athletics, has been chasing national records of late. When he finished fifth at the prestigious Diamond League meeting in Rabat last month, he had run 8:12.48.

Goswami set a personal best of 43:38.83 and finished second to Jemima Montag (42:34.30) of Australia. Bronze went to Emily Wamusyi Ngii (43:50.86) of Kenya.

The other Indian in the fight, Bhawna Jat, finished eighth and last with a personal best of 47:14.13.

Harminder Singh was the first Indian to win a medal in racewalking – a bronze medal – at the 2010 CWG 20K in Delhi.

“This is the first Commonwealth Games medal in walking for an Indian woman, so I’m delighted to have made a piece of history,” Goswami said after the event.

β€œI wasn’t thinking about the Australian (gold medalist Jemima Montag), if you look at what we did at the Tokyo Olympics and World Championships last month, she’s a better walker than me. I was just concentrating on my own racing and I’m hoping to gradually close the gap with her (in the future). When asked about the mascot and fingernails she had, Priyanka said, “I have a lord Krishna and I take him to every competition and he brought me luck today.

“I’ve also painted my nails with the flags of the country I’m racing in, so I have England for the Commonwealth Games, Japan for the Olympics, Spain because I’ve raced there, and some other flags too.”
